SEO for a proxy site

Part 3

We have the domain name, keywords, web hosting, proxy script it is now time to perform search engine optimisation on my proxy site. The proxy site will be live by the end of today and all optimised I will then proceed to record the statistics for the keywords I have chosen so I can track the amount of traffic I receive from the search engines and also track my search engine position for my keywords.

I already have web hosting selected and I have chose to use the glype script which you can download here http://www.glype.com/ the reason I chose glype over the rest of the scripts was because I felt glype has the most features whilst being the quickest performing and least server straining. I was very tempted to use CGI proxy script however with the well known large amounts of demand from servers that it is known to take up I felt that it would be better to choose Glype. However if you have a dedicated server or cheap hosting with a large bandwidth I suggest going for CGI. PHP proxy and Zelune as well as PHPhantom are also very good scripts however lack in the features and security that you are provided with in these two scripts. I also think it depends on whether or not your experienced with proxy sites, if not I would advise going for either PHPhantom, PHP proxy or Zelune as these are the easiest to install, edit and maintain.

This next section will guide you through the basic SEO strategies that I am implementing in to my proxy site. Firstly we shall start with a video tutorial on title tags and optimising your title tags for your proxy site.

Title Tags

The title tag is one of the most important if not the most important factors of ranking highly on the SERPS. It is situated at the top of the head section of a web page as you can see in my SEO title tag video below.

The title tag plays two important roles the first one being that it communicates to the search engines the type of content that will be displayed, on the page through using 4 to 5 keywords in the title tag (these being the keywords I chose in part 2 of the tutorial). Thus giving you the greatest impact overall on the search engine rankings, as this is the first piece of information that determines what your website is related too.

Relating this to proxy sites, the title tag is very important in order for you to achieve the first page for your chosen keywords, with a niche which is so saturated there are millions of proxy sites which are not correctly optimised with a fully optimised title tag this will automatically give you the upper hand.

The second factor is that a well written title tag will not only strengthen your search engine rankings but it will also increase the amount of visitors you receive to your website. The title tag will be eye catching and relevant to the user adding keywords such as the destination they would like to reach for example “myspace proxy” will catch the user’s eyes.

The title tag appears in two important locations here on my webpage at the top of the tab where it says “Proxy Tutorials” and here on the search engine results list. Search engine results

In your title tag you should include a fully unique title which includes 4-5 of your main chosen keywords these being the ones discussed in part 2 of this tutorial. The title tag should be eye catching so that users feel more inclined to click on your website rather than another proxy site.

Using the keywords that I chose in part 2 of the tutorial I have created this title tag

Free Proxies | Anonymous Proxies | Myspace Proxies | Bypass Proxy

This title tag uses all my keywords and has no connective words instead uses the lines to connect the words together.

Meta Tags

Meta tags have decreased in search engine importance over the years, with the description tag still holding an importance however the keyword tag no longer being a factor considered to change your search engine position. However for the time that the Meta keyword tag takes to create it is still worth creating and this next section will discuss both the description and keyword tags.

This tag is used by search engines to create a snippet; a sort of introduction to what your website is about it is for both search engines and users that this tag is used. Search engines use this tag to create a snippet introduction to the page a user can view via the search engines you can see a Meta description of my home page here Meta Description Snippet

“Search engine optimisation (SEO), Internet Marketing Articles and consultancy, Proxy tutorials and Google Articles, SEO Tools and methods of growing traffic ...”

The Meta description tag should be no longer than 160 characters this is the limit of which search engines will show on the results page. The description tags along with the title and keyword tags should all be unique on each page, obviously they can include some of the same keywords however they should not be duplicates. This would result in only one page being indexed rather than the several pages you have created.

The Meta description I shall use for my proxy site will use each of my keywords and will entice people to click my link rather than any of the competitors.

“Anonymous Proxy - Use these free proxies to unblock myspace anonymously using myspace proxies to bypass filters. Bypass proxy allows an anonymous secure route using free proxies.” – 152 characters

The words in bold display the keywords which I have added to the description.

Meta Keywords

I shall only briefly touch upon this tag as the decline of importance within search engines using this tag has now brought this tag to the end of its life span. Many people feel the tag is now a waste of time, if you feel the same way then you can ignore this part however I still find that it is worth creating. This tag should include all of your main keywords for that web page so for the proxy site it will be Free Proxies, Anonymous Proxy, Myspace Proxies, Bypass Proxy I will also mention that it is best if you only use 5-7 keywords on this tag so the importance of each keyword is strong. Again each page should have different keywords all relating to the web page’s content.

Content is King

If you have been a webmaster for sometime now you must have come across someone saying “content is king” or “content is everything” well it is. Content can include a large amount of keywords in the text with out it looking like it has been written for the search engines.

Now you may wonder why content has anything to do with proxy sites but that I think is the key to a successful proxy site which receives a large amount of stable traffic from search engines content!

You rarely see a proxy site which has a large 1000 word essay on what a proxy site is and how to use one, how they work and where they originated from mainly because no one reads it but why write something for someone to read. That’s not always the case, you don’t always write articles just for people to read, and when optimising a website you will write content for both users and search engines.

With a proxy site though, you can already guess that not many people are going to read the content on the site. Mainly because they are probably in a rush to get on to their favourite social networking site before the teacher comes back, but also because it will probably be boring. However that should not stop you from writing a nice paragraph or five on proxy sites, use the content to add your keywords to and maximise optimisation, surely this will help you rank higher.

Here are some key topics you could write about

What is a proxy site?
How does a proxy site work?
Why did you create this proxy site?

Then you could even write a whole paragraph on why this is the best proxy site on the internet, (obviously bend the truth a bit).
