The second in the blogging series, you can read previous articles in the 11 things to consider before you start blogging.
If you have read my previous article in the series which made clear that blogging is not an easy way of making money nor is it an easy way of creating traffic and returning visitors you will have thought long and hard whether blogging is for you. Are you ready to blog helped to show some of the large benefits and drawbacks of blogging which should make people more prepared for blogging.
The second in the 11 things to consider before you start blogging will be looking at your specific blogging market. This is the market that you are most interested in and where your expertise should lie. However this may not be enough to ensure that the content on your blog is quality, unique and frequent. Another major factor which effects whether or not a blog will succeed or fail is the market which the blogger is entering.
Now there are several different factors which we could look at to do with the bloggers market however to keep this precise we are going to look at the overall size of the market in relation to the amount of sub categories and evolution of the market. By this I basically mean is there enough to write about within the market.
Throughout my blogging career I have evolved this blog from what once was just an SEO blog to a blog which talks about SEO, Blogging, Internet marketing, Google, Proxy and more. I have had to increase the amount markets my blog relates with to ensure that I could keep increasing traffic, it also allows me to post frequently on various different niche markets which overall relate to each other. This wasn’t a plan that I had thought about whilst first creating my blog however 3-4 months after the blog had been created I was running out of ideas, unique content to write which was related to SEO. Not only this but I was learning new ways of marketing and other webmaster skills which I wanted to talk about, this led me to open up the areas which my blog related too. Giving the blog a wider target audience and more flexibility and choice I was able to increase traffic.
Depending upon which niche you have selected this may or may not be an issue that you are presented with in the future. However it is important to predict the future of your blog and ensure that your content won’t run dry. You need to be able to always write something on your blogs subject whether it is new strategies or old strategies ensuring you can write a unique article every day or week is a must.
How can I tell if the market has enough to write about?
This is simple, look at other blogs which are also written on the same subject and see whether their blog diversifies its subjects. If the blog has several different niche markets which they talk about then it’s likely that they have done this because others have done it or because one market is not enough. Most of the blogs that I read daily don’t focus on either SEO or Blogging they cover various subjects which are overall related as being parts of internet marketing.
There are some markets which are obvious that they won’t run out of content. If you are starting a blog which covers present day issues and takes stories from the news then it’s highly unlikely that you will ever run out of information to write about.
However with something like this, something so broad you may feel like targeting a specific part of the news. Whether it be news in a specific location or a category of news such as sporting news it may help to target a specific selection of people which you will then be able to concentrate on targeting, you may without knowing it become a unique site which covers one particularly popular area of the news without adding all of the other useless rubbish which no one wants to hear about.
Overall it is a good idea to research your market and ensure there will be enough information either new or old or unique information that you have found or created yourself to write in to articles so that you can post frequently. Whether it is every day, every couple of days or every week you need to ensure that you don’t run out of information. If this is the case then perhaps create a back up plan before hand, select various different niche’s which you can also write about on your blog. This will allow you to write about various niche topics which all relate to the same overall market.
