Do you want a bounce rate of 2.7?

Current Bounce Rate

Current Bounce Rate

I would like to say one thing before I start this article. This is not a definite guide to achieving a bounce rate of only 2.7% nor is it an article that will for certain help you to decrease your bounce rate it is just my own extract of what has happened to my blog during the last 2 months.

I have never tried to decrease my blogs bounce rate on purpose because personally I think it’s a goal that you should leave for when your blog has a large stable amount of traffic that you’re satisfied with. Instead I have been focusing on increasing traffic like most bloggers should. Using several different methods I have been able to steadily grow my blogs traffic and increase my subscriber count.

However my bounce rate has decrease even with out me trying. During the last two months my bounce rate has gone from 65% to 2.7% without me even trying. Now obviously your wondering how, heck so am I. The next couple of paragraphs will discuss what I have changed on and off my website that may have affected my blogs bounce rate.

The first thing I started doing on my site is adding an excerpt of my newest articles on my website. The excerpts usually cover the first paragraph or couple of sentences of the article and they include a hyperlink to allow the readers to continue reading the article. The idea of this excerpt is that readers who enter via the home page are enticed to continue reading an article by reading the first couple of sentences. This does work quite well however I am not sure if it’s the only reason for my bounce rate going so low.

If you use wordpress you can get a homepage excerpt plug in which works excellently. The plug in allows you to choose how many characters you want the home page to show and has more great features. It’s easy to install and does help increase the number of page views your site has and keeps your bounce rate down.

Homepage excerpts Download the homepage excerpts plug in there.

By adding excerpts on your home page it not only reduces your bounce rate but also makes people stay on your website longer by enticing them to click through to another page. This helps to increase the chances of a conversion and increases the amount of page views your website receives too.

The second thing I have started doing for my website is increasing traffic through social media sites. However the general rule is that social media marketing increases your bounce rate not reducing it. The reason for this is because a lot of social media traffic is untargeted. Nevertheless this depends on which social media site you use, what content your submitting and who your targeting.

If you want to increase traffic through social media sites then I suggest you target 2 to 3 social media sites which are either in your market or have a large enough market that you can receive a large amount of traffic through the website. After you have selected the social media sites your going to use to draw traffic from you can create your social media profile. I would suggest using the same username and profile image for each social media site you use. This helps to build an image for yourself and in the long term for your website. Ensure your profile includes your websites hyperlink and spend some time filling everything in your profile to make you look interesting.

The next step is communication, socialising with other social media users preferably in your market. There are different ways of finding other social media users in your market for different social media sites however if you take for example stumble upon you can find people in your market by looking at blogs that you may read daily or forums you may interact on and seeing who else has stumbled those pages. View their profile and find out whether they are quite an active part of the community if so why not add them to your friends list.

Social media marketing is all about networking, communicating with other people in your market and sharing pages or articles to benefit each other. Have you ever heard the phrase “If you pat my back, I’ll pat yours” this is very much relevant in this sort of internet marketing.

How do you think the successful bloggers do it? I constantly see one successful blogger linking to another then they link to another. It’s like a mini network, they send readers from one site to another until they eventually ends up back at the first site reading another article. Obviously this isn’t applicable for every successful blogger.

If you’re trying to increase the amount of traffic you receive on your website and you’ve not yet tried social media marketing then I definitely suggest it. Social media marketing can bring large amounts of traffic relatively quickly with little effort involved. However to make the most out of social media marketing I do recommend spending time networking, creating a good profile, reviewing, stumbling, digging other peoples content and analysing the content already on the social media site to figure out what sort of content works best on each social media site.

Another change I have made to my website is that I started to include social media buttons at the end of every article. This will again help with bringing in social media traffic however it may also have helped bring in targeted traffic which may have read more than one article.

August Bounce rate

August Bounce rate

Overall I am not really sure why my bounce rate has decreased so much. As I write this article my bounce rate currently stands at 2.47% for the last 30 days. I have included some print screens to show my past bounce rate and a print screen of my bounce rate last week. I hope this article was useful I understand it wasn’t the most informational however I do hope people don’t think I am just trying to boast as I am not.
